Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights formally submitted observations to the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR Committee) regarding human rights violations in Western Sahara. Focused first on Morocco, the ESCR Committee will review the country’s record for compliance with the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in September of 2015, although it began receiving observations, like the one filed by RFK Human Rights, in January. The report cites several rights violations committed by Morocco as the occupying power in Western Sahara, ranging from violations of the right to self-determination to cultural restrictions on the local populace.
