Human Rights Watch Reports on Government Crackdown in Azerbaijan

Human Rights Watch has urged the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) to investigate and potentially expel Azerbaijan from the group due to proposed legislation to curb opposition voices from civil society. The Azerbaijani government has targeted groups working on natural resource transparency by not allowing them to register grants and freezing bank accounts. Many of these groups have worked closely with the EITI, an international coalition to promote transparency in resource extraction. Human Rights Watch has created a list of actions Azerbaijan should take before being allowed to re-enter the coalition.
