Human Rights First Documents Hungarian Government’s Abuse of NGOs

Human Rights First reported that recent actions by the Hungarian government against non-governmental organizations raise questions about the country’s commitment to protecting human rights. In addition, Hungarian officials have done little to curb the rise of Jobbik, a radical neo-fascist political party.  Human Rights First called on the Community of Democracies to reexamine Hungary’s position on its Governing Council, citing the recent raids and lack of action on Jobbik. The organization claims the raids amount to violations of the Treaty of the European Union and the Warsaw Declaration, as it appears Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government is attempting to silence opposition.
